Job Summary

The Asphalt Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing all laboratory operations related to asphalt materials testing, quality control, and quality assurance. This role ensures compliance with industry standards, manages lab staff and equipment, and supports production and project teams by providing accurate testing data and technical expertise.

Requirements

Job Responsibilities
  • Laboratory Operations
  • Manage daily asphalt laboratory activities, including sampling, testing, and reporting.
  • Ensure testing is conducted in accordance with AASHTO, ASTM, and local/state DOT specifications.
  • Develop, review, and maintain laboratory procedures and quality manuals.
  • Schedule and prioritize testing to meet production and project deadlines.
  • Quality Control & Assurance
  • Oversee asphalt mix design development, verification, and optimization.
  • Review test results and take corrective action when materials fall outside specifications.
  • Coordinate with plant operations and field personnel to resolve quality issues.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation for audits, certifications, and inspections.
  • Staff Management
  • Supervise, train, and mentor laboratory technicians.
  • Ensure proper safety practices and compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support staff development.
  • Equipment & Resources
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
  • Manage inventory of lab supplies and materials.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs and upgrades as needed.
  • Reporting & Communication
  • Prepare detailed test reports and summaries for management, clients, and agencies.
  • Communicate findings clearly to production, engineering, and project teams.
  • Support project bids and mix approvals with technical data.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects and tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Adhering to deadlines
  • Ability to work flexible times
  • Promoting a safe work environment and maintaining a clean and organized work area
  • Great attention to detail is required
  • Reporting any issues to the manager
  • Any other task requested by the manager
Job Skills & Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in asphalt materials testing or quality control.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • ACI, NICET, or DOT asphalt certifications
  • Superpave mix design certification
  • OSHA safety training
  • Strong knowledge of geotechnical investigation techniques, foundation design, and soil mechanics.
  • Experience with geotechnical software (e.g., gINT, PLAXIS, Geo Studio) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent time management skills to effectively prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with the team members, management, and clients.
  • Experience leading projects successfully.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills to identify issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, multitasking, and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills such as Word and Excel.
  • Clean MVR, background, and drug screening.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Tasks assigned by the supervisor or manager
