Position: Recreation Leader - Adult Softball Scorekeeper (Temporary/Part-Time)

Overview

Join the Eureka Community Services team as a softball scorekeeper this season! Games start in early June and run through mid-September. Games are played Monday-Thursday nights at 6:30PM, 7:45PM, and 9:00PM. Games take place at Kennedy & Hartman Fields in Eureka. Men’s and Coed leagues are available. Staff work 3 games per night. Paper applications may also be obtained in-person from the Adorni Center at 1011 Waterfront Drive in Eureka.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, oversees activities as related to youth and adult sports, after school programs, camps and overall recreational programming; coordinates and oversees enrichment and large motor activities; assists Recreation Division staff; performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from management and/or supervisory Community Services personnel.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a temporary part-time class in the Recreation Division responsible for providing supervision in a variety of youth programs. This classification is distinguished from Recreation Aide in that the latter has lesser responsibility in either program development and/or administrative functions.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Conduct and supervise youth activities in various programs including but not limited to after school programs, sports programs, community classes, camps and special events.
  • Check fields, playgrounds and facilities for possible safety hazards; secure fields, facilities, and lights, following completion of activities.
  • Maintain supplies, plans and implements activities.
  • Act as an information source to the public concerning recreational programs and activities.
  • Assist in compliance with relevant health and safety laws and guidelines;
  • Perform duties related to sports programming and scorekeeping.
  • Oversee operations during skate night events.
  • Assist in oversight of Community Volunteer events.
  • Perform related duties in support of recreational programs as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge Of:

  • Working with youth in structured settings.
  • Field and/or facilities layouts and standards, and required field equipment.
  • Prep and planning of activities as they relate to assigned programs.
  • Basic safety policies, procedures and techniques.
  • General filing, reporting procedures and recordkeeping.

Ability To:

  • Meet the physical demands of prolonged physical activity.
  • Interact and communicate effectively with the public.
  • Adhere to department policies and procedures concerning safety, accident/incident reporting, inappropriate behavior, etc.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

Any Combination Of Training And Experience That Would Provide The Required Knowledge,

Skills And Abilities

Is Qualifying. A Typical Way To Obtain The Required Qualifications Would Be:

  • Work experience in recreation or sports programs and events and/or
  • Participation in similar programming through school or community programs and/or
  • Volunteer service in a related field
  • Experience working with children is desirable.

Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass DOJ background test if working with youth.
  • Must present negative TB test if working with youth.
  • Obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 2 months of hire.
  • Valid California class C driver’s license may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities and basic facility maintenance; and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects necessary to perform job functions.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Employees work in a variety of settings including a standard office and/or various indoor and outdoor recreational facility environments with moderate to high noise levels, differing temperature conditions and possible exposure to hazardous physical substances.
