Reports to the Supervising Veterinarian directly and Chief Veterinarian indirectly. Assists in supervision of contract and relief veterinarians, clinic technicians and assistants, foster and transfer coordinators, and department volunteers as required and in absence of Supervising Veterinarian.
The Shelter Veterinarian provides examinations, veterinary care, monitoring and surgery services for shelter animals. The position additionally serves as backup to the Supervising Veterinarian (managing staff, shelter medicine efforts, surgery program and disease control protocols) in her/his absence. The schedule for the position is generally 5 days a week and includes a weekend day, evenings and on-call requirements. Emergency hours may be implemented during emergency situations.
EssentialDuties/Responsibilities
- Perform spay/neuter, dental surgeries, and other surgeries as required, on shelter and a limited number of owned animals.
- Provide physical examinations, care, and monitoring for domestic animals in the care of the Organization, in compliance with basic standards of care and shelter protocols. Participate in scheduled medical rounds.
- Complete, maintain and oversee accurate and complete daily medical treatment records (paper and electronic).
- When working, provide direct supervision to clinic technicians and assistants, foster and transfer coordinators, and volunteers to ensure compliance with medical protocols and treatments, disease control standards, safety and personnel policies and procedures.
- Act as liaison with other veterinarians/veterinary clinics regarding the treatment of injured/ill stray animals, shelter animals or animals adopted from the Organization.
- Research treatment options for injured/ill shelter animals and make treatment or euthanasia recommendations.
- Work collaboratively with Shelter Manager and others on census management and animal routing issues including making euthanasia decisions. This decision making process will include approving the euthanasia list as needed.
- Participate in rounds and assist Shelter management personnel with veterinary medical cases in shelter and other necessary locations.
- Supervise and educate applicable students participating in rotations at the Shelter.
- Assist with the development of standard operating procedures and protocols for veterinary treatment and disease control.
- Conduct/assist with staff and/or volunteer training related to veterinary care, disease control/animal health issues as required.
- Participate in staff training as required. In accordance with DEA requirements ensures proper use, security and inventory of controlled drugs and accurately completes usage logs.
- Understand and follow all safety guideline and protocols to ensure a safe environment.
- Advise clients on health issues related to impounded and adopted animals.
- In conjunction with the Supervising Veterinarian, provide coverage for the on-call services of the department and including assigned overnights, weekends and holidays.
- Assist with euthanasia training and euthanasia as directed.
- Drive on behalf of the Organization on occasion.
- Meet and maintain attendance and punctuality expectations.
- Adhere to the Standards of Professional Conduct.
- Serve as back-up for and assist other Shelter locations as needed.
- Participate in meetings and on committees as assigned.

Job Qualifications
:
Must be currently licensed in the State of Colorado to practice veterinary medicine (or obtain CO license soon after hiring) and maintain certification. Must provide proof of, and maintain, Professional Liability Insurance. Proven experience in the field of veterinary medicine, with high quality/high volume surgical sterilization and Shelter experience preferred. Must be at least 21 years of age (required for insurance purposes).
Available to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as required. Supervisory experience preferred. Experience with small mammals and exotics helpful. Committed to the mission of the Organization and the success of its shelter medicine program. Bilingual English/Spanish reading, writing, understanding and speaking a plus and includes a wage premium.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
:
Knowledge of shelter medicine, including population and individual animal health management, disease prevention and control, and epidemiology, strongly desired. Able to work under pressure and multi-task as appropriate. Strong customer service, oral/written communication skills and interest in networking with other professionals. Computer skills required.
