The department is seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician for the Maintenance Program in Evanston, Wyoming. This position offers a $2,000 hiring bonus and the following benefits:

Responsibilities- Maintain and operate complex equipment safely and proficiently.
- Assist in training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Under limited supervision, flag traffic and set up traffic control devices.
- Operate heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks, augers, aerial lifts, and sanders/chemical systems to remove snow and ice.
- Rehabilitate roadway surfaces and traffic control devices (signs, pavement markings).
- Perform general maintenance of highway‑related facilities such as rest areas, including water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements.
- Attend and complete all required state and federal training to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and assimilate new skills.
- Communicate status updates and process effectiveness.
- Utilize computers for agency practices and keep up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment.
- Assess effectiveness of snow and ice removal treatments and adjust as necessary.
- Adhere to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including correct use of PPE.
Preference may be given to applicants who hold a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment. Candidates must be able to obtain the following certifications if needed:
- Water certifications.
- Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
- Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Flagger certification.
- State highway pavement marking and signing standards.
- State and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures.
- Equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
- Hazardous materials response procedures.
- Federal and state PPE requirements.
- Basic operation of single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors.
- Basic office equipment (computers, calculators, telephones).
- 2‑4 years of relative work experience (highway maintenance/construction)
* or* an associate’s degree in engineering with 0‑1 year of relative experience. - Ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 12 months of hire.
- Physical requirements:
ability to lift/carry 50 lbs, frequent use of manual and powered tools, daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment, exposure to hazardous materials, work in adverse weather, stand/sit for long periods, ability to walk long distances, work around heavy traffic, occasional overnight travel.

- Occasional overnight travel is required.
- FLSA:
Non‑Exempt. - WYDOT conducts motor‑vehicle record checks.
- Pre‑employment drug screening and/or physical; random drug and alcohol testing.
- Availability for emergency work calls at any time.
- Report to the department shop within 30 minutes of a call.
- Drug‑free workplace.
- E‑Verify is used to confirm eligibility.
- Hiring bonus eligibility: temporary employees accepting a full‑time position; current employees accepting a promotion (public recruitment required); one year of service to WYDOT; internal candidates remain in the position for a minimum of one year; employees eligible for one hiring bonus in a 12‑month period; downgrade during the twelve‐month period requires repayment.
