Aboutthe Role
The R&D Packaging Engineer will deliver packaging development projects from concept through commercialization. Reporting to the R&D Senior Manager, Regional Packaging, North America, the role serves as key technical support or technical lead for projects and programs. Objectives are achieved through individual contributions and support to team members and cross‑functional packaging customers.
Responsibilities- Drive packaging development from concept to launch.
- Ensure design ideas are accurately developed into innovative packaging components and systems in a sustainable way.
- Protect products, optimize costs, raise quality, and meet regulatory standards.
- Support new product launches and enhance existing brands.
- Deliver on making packaging more sustainable and products more desirable.
- Apply advanced industry knowledge and build technical foundations for research and data analysis to create best‑in‑class products.
- Create packaging material specifications, drawings, and procedural specifications to support product/packaging configurations.
- Assist or identify material requirements, draft specifications, and apply testing procedures to ensure efficient cost, line performance, package quality and supply chain robustness.
- Apply technical packaging knowledge to solve difficult problems based on risk and benefit assessments and identify timely, cost‑effective solutions.
- Build technical acumen of MJN packaging formats to provide insight to key stakeholders internally and externally.
- Develop an understanding of technical requirements and constraints of customer design for the category (e.g., club stores, e‑commerce).
- Execute defined tasks on cross‑functional projects, working independently as lead when required.
- Participate in project meetings, issue documentation, support development of project timelines, and deliver on assigned tasks.
- Conduct root cause analysis, facilitate a D.O.E., and apply troubleshooting techniques for technical issues and performance challenges.
- Manage lab analysis, production line trials, and supplier testing; analyze performance data to drive technical and business recommendations.
- Plan, lead, and attend packaging manufacturer and MJN plant trials to support evaluation and problem resolution.
- Support the development of packaging cost models and alternatives to recommend optimal solutions.
- Lead high‑scale projects, coordinate among peers, and report results, risks and progress.
- Analyze industry/customer dynamics, technical feasibility, and market viability to build innovative solutions.
- Lead the design and development of existing technologies to adopt new packaging, cost savings and core renovation initiatives.
- Partner with the business to commercialize packaging solutions for large projects/programs led by others or by the incumbent.
- Technical leader with passion for package development.
- Minimum 4 years as a packaging engineer or related role leading multiple projects from idea to launch.
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline or related field.
