Position Summary
Provide primary coverage for the public safety - security function for university property, students, faculty, visitors and staff.
Duties/Responsibilities- Provide a 24/7 presence on the campus, student housing and other university property.
- Enforce university rules and regulations, local, state and federal laws as prescribed by the Board of Trustees.
- Patrol on foot, bicycle, or in vehicle university buildings, housing, and grounds to protect property, assets and persons from theft, fire, vandalism, disturbances and safety hazards. Investigate and report potential hazardous, unlawful activity, unusual or suspicious conditions or activities and initiate the appropriate actions necessary to protect persons or the university assets.
- Make routine and non‑routine security checks of buildings and grounds. Unlock and lock doors utilizing manual and electronic locking mechanisms, and according to schedules and instructions.
- Monitor radio and other communication devices and respond to calls for service including but not limited to distress, domestic disputes, and complaints of alleged unruly activity. Assess and bring situation under control. Take statements from victims and witnesses. Provide appropriate or additional assistance if requested from public safety or other agencies.
- Respond to and investigate fire, search and rescue, security, emergency and building alarms; clear traffic and provide support to emergency personnel; provide emergency medical response until relieved by equal or higher qualified emergency responders. May be required to provide transportation for injured or ill students to the University Health Center. Rescue persons trapped in elevators.
- Respond to and report traffic accidents. Assess extent of personal injuries and provide medical assistance until relieved by outside responders. Take statements from victims and witnesses. Assist with extracting victims and lifting individuals onto stretchers and into medical vehicles. Direct the removal of vehicles involved.
- Prepare and write reports for investigations of violations of university policy, all crimes, injury/illness complaints, traffic accidents, fire alarms, property damage, thefts, disorderly conduct, animal complaints including their capture, and other incidents occurring on or related to the University.
- Communicate with appropriate university departments about safety or security irregularities occurring on university property or involving faculty, staff, students or visitors.
- Deliver disciplinary or other documents to university staff, faculty, students or others as directed.
- Participate in the formal investigation of violations by searching scenes, search and seizure, logging evidence and following prescribed procedures to preserve and protect evidence. Interview victims and witnesses and conduct neighborhood checks.
- Prepare and submit to superiors all required reports and summaries of activities according to the established department deadlines.
- Testify in on‑campus disciplinary hearings and criminal/civil court as required by department policies and procedures.
- Enforce campus traffic regulations. Identify traffic offenders, verify license and registration data. Educate drivers on safe driving practices and issue warnings or citations as warranted.
- Provide courteous customer service to students, faculty, staff and visitors. Assist persons on campus with a variety of public services such as sickness, injury, directions, vehicle/foot escorts, assisting stranded motorists, jump starting vehicles, airing of vehicle tires, supplying minimum amount of gasoline, lost and found property, money escorts for university personnel, and assisting with vehicle and building unlocks.
- Direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic on campus as directed or as needed.
- Mobilize motorized vehicles when required.
- Provide security and crowd control at campus demonstrations, exhibits, sporting events, dances, and other events.
