Overview
Zap Energy is building a low-cost, compact and scalable fusion energy platform. Zap’s technology uses a sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch approach and aims to deliver commercially viable fusion energy with a shorter path and lower capital needs than traditional methods. We are seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist or Manager to join our mission to develop scalable fusion energy while maintaining a safe and compliant workplace.
Responsibilities- Develop and support a comprehensive, empowered safety culture within a dynamic research and development environment.
- Build, administer, and instruct safety training, procedures, and compliance systems tailored to the various internal audiences.
- Partner with facilities, lab management, supply chain, human resources, finance, and technical teams to achieve objectives and maintain a safe and compliant workplace.
- Proactively engage with employees at all levels to understand concerns and hazards, and facilitate daily safe work conduct.
- Continually assess EHS risks and make recommendations to teams and company leaders.
- Provide technical expertise in occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, and sustainability.
- Lead thorough investigations for all incidents and ensure timely completion of corrective actions.
- Develop effective root cause analysis and countermeasures.
- Stay up to date on regulatory requirements and industry trends.
- Plan for future facilities, processes, equipment, suppliers, and materials and share considerations with leadership.
- Engage with consultants, external agencies, and regulatory organizations at local, state, and national levels.
- Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Environmental, Health, and Safety or related field
- 10+ years of total EHS experience
- 3+ years of experience managing an EHS team
- 5+ years of EHS experience in a corporate laboratory / R&D environment
- Demonstrated ability to develop, deploy and administer EHS programs in R&D organizations
- Excellent verbal, written and customer service skills
- Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Environmental, Health, and Safety or related field
- 7+ years of total EHS experience
- 5+ years of EHS experience in a corporate laboratory / R&D environment
- Demonstrated ability to develop, deploy and administer EHS programs in R&D organizations
- Excellent verbal, written and customer service skills
- Direct experience managing hazard classes in corporate laboratory / R&D environments, including:
- High Voltage – Arc flash
- Functional Safety
- Thermal / Hot Work
- Chemical – Reactive caustic metals
- Lasers
- Compressed gases
- Pressure vessels
- Confined spaces
- Radiological
- Strong positive energy and a passion for improving safety and well-being
- Highly organized with excellent attention to detail, eager for new and ambitious assignments

- Team-minded, collaborative, respectful, and open to new ideas
- Self-starter with the ability to coordinate and lead safety efforts with minimal direction
