Talascend is currently seeking a MCFR Radioanalytical Chemist for a contract opportunity with our client in Everette, Washington (near Seattle).

Overview

As an MCFR Radioanalytical Chemist, you will play a direct and pivotal role in conducting experiments related to the Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR) technology, assisting in the synthesis of uranium‑bearing molten salts used in many MCFR projects.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct large scale laboratory synthesis of molten salts by performing chemistry and processes in high temperature molten salts
  • Adhere to developed procedures to perform batched synthesis and purification of both coolant and uranium‑bearing molten salts
  • Prepare molten salt samples with diverse compositions to be used in a variety of ongoing MCFR R&D projects
  • Prepare or assist with technical reports, peer review manuscripts, intellectual property documents and conference presentations
  • Maintain laboratory procedures (e.g., calibration, analytical methods, notebook results preparation, usage documentation)
  • Perform all work in compliance with site safety and radiation protection guidelines, including effective teamwork and communication with health physicists, authorized users and RSO
  • Emphasize safety in new and existing designs and safe practices in all experimental activities
  • Perform other general duties associated with position as member of the team to ensure ongoing effectiveness and continuous improvement of R&D efforts
Qualifications
  • Master’s level degree in chemistry, radiochemistry, materials science, physics, or a related subject and 0‑2 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor’s level degree in related disciplines and 0‑4 years of relevant experience
Requirements
  • Demonstrated hands‑on chemistry laboratory experience
  • Laboratory experience in radiochemistry, inorganic synthesis, and/or radio chemical synthesis is strongly preferred but not required
  • Familiarity with at least 2 laboratory and characterization methods that include but are not limited to tube furnace operations, pressure vessel operations, ICP‑OES, ICP‑MS, and pXRD in addition to other common laboratory analytical techniques
  • Demonstrated experience working in inert and moisture‑free atmospheres, such as glove boxes and Schlenk lines is a plus
  • Hands on experience in handling actinide salts in glove boxes and fume hoods is a plus
  • Demonstrated performance within multifunctional teams and in the execution of complex projects is desired
  • Experience working and communicating productively in a multidisciplinary team including R&D, production, quality assurance, and engineering design functions
  • Ability to understand requirements (regulations, codes and standards, etc.), and incorporate them into documents
  • Strong organizational and communication skills including technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork
