The Fuels Module Leader (SO) is responsible for assisting the Fire Management Officer (FMO) in coordinating the activities of the Fuels Crew. The Fuels Crew Module Leader supervises the Fuels Crew in day-to-day tasks, risk mitigation project work, wildfire response operations and maintains safety first as the foundation for all aspects of wildland fire management activities. Directs and supervises the fuels crew in performing a variety of mitigation, wildfire suppression and fire management duties.
The Fuels Crew Module Leader may personally engage in fighting forest, range, and other wildland fires and participating in prescribed fire operations.

**** Jefferson County Sheriff's Office may require sworn and non-sworn sheriff's office employees to submit to periodic, random, and unannounced drug testing.
*** Directs and supervises moderately complex fuels management projects and participates in more complex projects that may include gathering data for monitoring programs and implementing prescribed fire, and mechanical and biological treatments, inventorying fuel beds, and piling vegetation debris.
* Hiking on rigorous terrain to establish project perimeters, marking trees and locating access points. Using chainsaws, log chokers, chains, ropes and a variety of hand tools to conduct fuels management operations. Moving, maintaining and troubleshooting machinery including, but not limited to skid steer, wood chipper and various equipment attachments. Oversees sawyers, and other laborers during fuels projects, maintenance of equipment. Conducting Type 3 prescribed fire operations.
May be required to operate light vehicles, 4X4's, UTV’s and heavy equipment. Provides education and interacts with community organizers and neighbors to explain the effects of fuels projects.
* Hiking on rigorous terrain to scout fires, safety zones, escape routes, hazards and establish fire line locations. Using chainsaws, hand tools for establishing control lines. Identifying resources needs to accomplish incident objectives. Driving, inspecting, maintaining and troubleshooting vehicles and heavy equipment. Inspecting, using and maintaining water pumps for use in suppression. Performing firing and burnout operations under supervision. Incident management at the Type 4 level.
Provides tactical directions on attacking, controlling, or mopping up fires, building or patrolling fire lines, cleaning up burned areas within fire lines, and suppressing spot fires.
* Coordinates with the Fire Management Officers to establish benchmarks and performance objectives for the crew. Reviews Geospatial Data in preparation for on-site layout. Schedules work sites based on priorities, including time, weather issues, and site access. Leads the development and implementation of training programs including fire management classes, equipment use and maintenance classes, general safety classes and other agency required training.
* Creates daily briefings on fire conditions and current fire activity. Maintains records and provides updates on current projects. Reviews and presents after action reports to leadership, utilizes reports to create training programs and inform future operations. Plans and maintains a budget for crew operations and project work including credit card purchases, travel, training and other related items.
