Position Overview

The Office of Campus Police Services’ mission is to provide a safe and secure campus for our community. The department consists of an Operations and Administrative Office: the Operations Section includes sworn police officers, security officers, and public safety telecommunicators. Services provided by the Operations Section include calls for police services, taking reports of crimes and complaints, student and staff escorts, and other related services.

The Administrative Section provides administrative support, including record keeping, discovery for attorneys, and processing of report requests.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol an assigned area of offices, buildings, and grounds including parking areas, and make the required reports.
  • Prevent unauthorized persons from entering the grounds and buildings; check automobiles and trucks entering and leaving the college.
  • Open and close gates, doors, windows, and raise and lower flags.
  • Direct traffic in and around the campus; regulate and control pedestrian and vehicular traffic at designated public intersections to assure safety and a minimum of interference.
  • Takes needed action as to suspicious persons and conditions, and report significant actions, occurrences, and conditions.
  • Note and report conditions that constitute dangers and hazards.
  • Conduct escorts on campus for students, faculty, and staff members as requested.
  • Protect buildings, contents, and occupants from hazards.
Qualifications Required
  • Graduation from a high school or vocational high school or possession of an approved high school equivalent certificate.
  • New Jersey driver’s license in good standing.
  • Must be able to pass a pre‑employment physical.
Preferred
  • Assist the police with the maintenance of order on the campus.
  • Takes action as required to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, disorder, and/or damage to state property and equipment.
  • Provides assistance when accidents or illness occur in emergencies: summons the police and/or the fire department as needed.
Additional Qualifications
  • May be required to assist with building evacuations during times of danger or drills.
  • May be required to work off hours, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • May require sitting/standing for extended periods of time.
  • May require lifting moderately heavy objects.
