Trust Fellow appointments will be expected to provide various types of anaesthetic cover through the day and to contribute to the on‑call rota. Trainees cover each of three areas after hours-theatres, the obstetric unit and the ICU.

With approximately 950 beds, and over 30,000 anaesthetics administered per annum, the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital offers broad clinical experience. Experience is available in virtually all anaesthetic specialities with the exception of cardiothoracic, neuro and neonatal surgery. The department is staffed by 61 consultants, 11 SAS doctors, approximately 16 ST3-7s and 15 Core level Trainees, 4 Anaesthetic Associates (plus 4 trainee AAs) and 7 Critical Care Nurse Specialists.
The ICU at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital has 15 beds (including 1 dedicated paediatric bed) and admits over 800 patients/ year. It is recognised by the IBTICM for Basic, Intermediate and Advanced training in Intensive Care Medicine. There is a weekly journal club and tutorial programme.
Governance meetings and Morbidity/Mortality meetings are held regularly as are a wide variety of educational meetings and tutorials. There is a formal induction, appraisal and assessment system in place as well as allocated Educational Supervisors for all LAS doctors.
There is a multidisciplinary Pain Management Service consisting of 4 Consultant Anaesthetists, Clinical Nurse Specialists and a full range of allied professionals.
Working Pattern: 46.75 hours. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to out‑of‑hours work as part of a team covering obstetric anaesthesia, general anaesthesia and supporting the intensive care unit.
