Trust Doctor in Intensive Care Medicine
Royal Devon University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Eastern Services are seeking to appoint 1 Trust Doctor in Intensive Care Medicine, with commencement date of August 2026. The tenure of this post is 12 months with the possibility of extension depending upon service need. The post does not attract a National Training Number. The post is based within the existing critical care teams with access to departmental teaching and other developmental opportunities.
Despite not being recognised as training post it allows doctors to improve the breadth and depth of their experience in Intensive Care Medicine. Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required.
The Eastern critical care services comprise a 15‑bed unit (funded for 13 patients) providing Level 2 and 3 care for both the elective and emergency medical and surgical services. Specialist services include plastics, maxillofacial, gynae‑oncology, urology, vascular, interventional radiology, complex orthopaedics, paediatrics, haematology/oncology, interventional cardiology, stroke, respiratory and renal. The ICU was graded as outstanding at the last CQC inspection in 2015.

The role involves participating in daily ward rounds and the completing the tasks resulting from this, reviewing ICU referrals and attending MET and cardiac arrest calls. There is supervision from ICU consultants during the day and immediate supervision by an anaesthetic registrar overnight with remote supervision by an ICU consultant.
Working PatternThe post holder will be expected to contribute to daytime activity and to take part in the out of hours on‑call rota which includes up to 16 nights in a 13‑week block.
