Job Overview

Axcis is working with an alternative provision in Exeter, seeking a committed, resilient and caring Teaching Assistant to join their team supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. This is a rewarding role for someone who wants to make a genuine difference to the lives of children and young people who may have experienced trauma, disrupted education, or time in the care system.

You will work 1:1 with primary and secondary aged pupils, supporting both their education and wider development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide consistent 1:1 support tailored to individual needs.
  • Support emotional regulation, social skills and positive behaviour.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Support learning both in school and in the community.
  • Act as a positive role model and safe adult.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and wider professionals.
  • Support core subjects (English, Maths, etc.) alongside the class teacher, helping pupils re‑engage with learning and fill gaps in their education.
  • Take part in community‐based activities and outreach programmes designed to build confidence, reduce anxiety, and develop social and cooperation skills.
Essential Requirements
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Access to your own car.
  • Willingness to obtain business insurance and use your vehicle for work.
  • Ability to build rapport with vulnerable young people.
  • Calm, patient and resilient approach.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.
Desirable (but not essential)
  • Experience working with SEMH, SEND, care‑experienced children or youth work.
  • Background in education, psychology, social care or similar.
  • Team Teach or de‑escalation training.
