Position: RACING EQUINE TRAINER COACH

Position Summary

The award‑winning training provider is looking to strengthen its delivery team with the appointment of a new Racing Equine Trainer Coach based within the Devon and Exeter area. This is a full‑time permanent role with London weighting/fringe allowance of £2,000‑£4,000, salary £26,000‑£33,000 plus great benefits including 25 days annual leave, 4 days Christmas shut‑down, 1 day off for birthday, early finish Fridays, Westfield Health benefits, employee ownership, pension scheme, long service awards, one‑off payments, increased annual leave, and 45p per mile mileage allowance.

Responsibilities include actively managing a caseload of learners and delivering Equine and Racing qualifications, ensuring compliance with Department of Education funding rules. The role involves close collaboration with learners, employers, the Curriculum Specialist for Functional Skills, and IQAs to maintain high quality throughout every stage of the learner journey. A blended learning model of face‑to‑face and remote delivery is offered, tailored to each learner.

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities
  • Support the entire learner journey: enrolment, induction and initial assessment.
  • Equine & Racing care teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Coaching and mentoring.
  • Delivery of Functional Skills English and maths.
  • Support the wider curriculum (PREVENT, British Values, Safeguarding, ICT, etc.).
  • Ensure correct completion of mandatory paperwork to evidence all aspects of the learner journey to an auditable standard.

Essential Industry Specific Experience
  • Up‑to‑date, relevant, deep and broad experience of working within the Equine and/or Racing industry (e.g., head lad/lass, yard manager, senior instructor).
  • Passion for work‑based learning.

    Experience in the occupational area of apprenticeships including practical and current knowledge of working practices, infrastructure, tools and technologies.
  • Occupational competence with a comprehensive and proven track record of service in the equine and racing industry supported by a detailed CPD record.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of horse anatomy, physiology, and welfare.
  • Comprehensive experience of best practice for workplace saddlery, equipment and clothing used and how to maintain it.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of safe working practices in an equine and racing environment, including routine yard, field duties and horse husbandry.
Essential Qualifications
  • Work‑based Diploma in Level 3 Horse Care and Management or Racehorse Care and Management or BHS Stage 3 Care and Ride.
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths, or ability to undertake them successfully within the probation period.
  • Experience of working with and maintaining quality assurance processes and complying with regulatory requirements.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development relevant to the industry area being assessed.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours
  • Working knowledge of the equestrian and racing sector.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with substantive experience of providing supportive, concise feedback to learners, assessors and stakeholders.
  • Experience of producing clear, accurate and detailed written reports.
  • Self‑starter with drive, ambition and investigative skills.
  • Effective time management, with the ability to prioritise, plan and organise effectively.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with employers, learners and colleagues.
  • Outstanding integrity and interpersonal skills, confidently dealing with a wide range of people.
  • Team player with a ‘can do’ attitude and good sense of humour.
  • Customer‑focused commercial awareness.
  • Ability to offer guidance on careers advice and next steps after completing an apprenticeship.
  • Awareness of delicate and sensitive areas of confidentiality.
