Lecturer in Archaeology (Education and Scholarship)

This full‑time post is available from 01/09/2026 to 31/08/2029 on a fixed‑term basis to cover a secondment. The starting salary will be from £43,482 on Grade (F), depending on qualifications and experience. We welcome applications from candidates interested in part‑time working or job‑share arrangements.

The Post of Lecturer in Archaeology will support the delivery of teaching in Archaeology at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Post is available for 3 years (to cover buyout for a 3‑year Leverhulme Fellowship) and requires the following:

• Expert knowledge of the principles and practice of Archaeology.
• Experience of training undergraduates in practical archaeological fieldwork methods, both survey and excavation, including oversight of individual trenches or whole archaeological excavations at site director level.
• Experience teaching archaeological research methods, period specialisms and/or a range of specialist techniques appropriate to your specific area of expertise.
• Experience of grading student work and providing written feedback to students at undergraduate and masters level.
• Willingness to work to deadlines accepting that these may be spread unevenly across the academic year.
• Willingness to work with colleagues to successfully run and deliver both solo‑taught and team‑taught modules.
• Willingness to work collegiately with colleagues across the department and professional services to deliver an excellent student experience at undergraduate and post‑graduate level.
• Willingness to contribute to the broader life of the department including taking on admin roles as required.

For a Lecturer post you will:

• Possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist and core knowledge in the discipline, demonstrated by a PhD in Archaeology (or nearing completion), to develop teaching programmes, and teach and support learning.
• Use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students.
• Participate in and develop external networks, for example, to contribute to student recruitment, secure student placements, facilitate outreach work, generate income, obtain consultancy projects, or build relationships for future activities.
• Have evidence of excellent teaching identified by peer review and/or positive student feedback.
• Be expected to work towards Fellow of the HEA status and to attend formal CPD relating to this.
