Infrastructure (Water)

Start your career where it matters most – building a better future together

Tilbury Douglas is a leading UK building, infrastructure, engineering and fit‑out company. Within Tilbury Douglas Infrastructure, we deliver essential water and wastewater projects that protect the environment, support communities and ensure the safe treatment and distribution of water across the UK.

As an Apprentice Commissioning Engineer (Water), you’ll support the safe testing, commissioning and handover of new and upgraded water infrastructure assets. You’ll gain hands‑on experience across live projects while developing the technical knowledge and skills needed for a long‑term career in commissioning and engineering within the water sector.

Location

This role will be based in the South West region, working within our Infrastructure – Water teams. You’ll be predominantly site‑based across water and wastewater treatment works, pumping stations and network projects, with travel across the region as required.

What you’ll be doing

As an Apprentice Commissioning Engineer, you’ll combine on‑the‑job learning with formal academic study, developing the skills required to become a qualified commissioning engineer.

You will study towards a Level 6 Electro‑Mechanical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship gaining a BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) degree.

With the support of experienced commissioning engineers and project teams, you’ll:

  • Support commissioning activities on water and wastewater projects, including pumping stations, treatment works, tanks and pipelines
  • Assist with testing and commissioning of mechanical, electrical and ICA systems
  • Learn how commissioning plans, procedures and programmes are developed and followed
  • Support inspections, functional testing and performance checks to ensure assets meet design and regulatory requirements
  • Assist with fault finding and resolution during commissioning activities
  • Learn how health, safety and environmental requirements are applied during commissioning works
  • Support the preparation of commissioning documentation, test records and handover information
  • Work alongside site, design, construction and operational teams to ensure smooth transition from construction to operational use
  • Develop an understanding of water industry standards, permits and regulatory processes
Why this role?

This apprenticeship provides a unique entry route into the water commissioning discipline, combining real project experience with a recognised engineering degree. You’ll be supported through structured training, mentoring and professional development, giving you a strong foundation to progress into an Assistant Commissioning Engineer role within Tilbury Douglas Infrastructure upon completion.
