Mott Mac Donald Bentley is a fully integrated design and build business combining the design expertise of Mott Mac Donald with the contracting experience of JN Bentley to deliver award‑winning projects. This role is an Engineering Geologist within the firm, supported by an existing Geotechnical team across multiple national contracts, primarily in the UK water market.
Responsibilities- Undertake geotechnical desk studies, design ground investigations, compile ground investigation tender documentation and administer contracts.
- Support the technical supervision of ground investigation fieldworks and liaise with contractors.
- Interpret and verify ground investigation data, present appropriate ground models, develop geotechnical design parameters and clearly communicate identified ground risks.
- Produce ground investigation reports and geotechnical design reports in accordance with EC7.
- Liaise with wider project teams (design and construction) to develop best‑value engineering designs and communicate ground risks and mitigation.
- Perform geotechnical analyses and design, produce calculation packages, and input to works specifications and construction drawings.
- Understand, apply and contribute to design standards with a good knowledge of client and industry standards.
- Challenge client specifications and defend solutions to complex problems.
- Identify opportunities to improve delivery processes, including the development and implementation of standard designs, sustainable solutions and digital tools.
- Act as a technical checker on project documents and undertake technical reviews for projects across teams.
- Supervise and mentor graduates and engineers, assisting them to develop their knowledge and skills.
- Undertake site reviews to ensure buildability of solutions and integration within existing systems.
- Support other framework teams across the wider MMBC business unit and travel out of area when required.
- Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology (MEng/MSc).
- Working towards or have achieved Chartership through a relevant Institution (ICE, IOM3, Geol Soc).
- Strong engineering geology and geotechnical design competencies, ideally in the water/wastewater sector.
- Experience in the field of ground engineering in the UK, with a full understanding of the geotechnical lifecycle of construction projects.
- Previous experience undertaking project desk studies, identifying key ground risks, planning and supervising ground investigations, developing ground models, interpreting ground data and delivering elements of geotechnical design.
- Valid driving licence and willingness to travel to sites.
