Encortec is a University of Exeter spin-out developing self-powered, low-power IoT monitoring systems for railway infrastructure, industrial equipment and other critical assets.
We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development, testing and optimisation of our products.
The RoleOur energy-harvesting devices have already been developed to prototype stage. Previous experience in energy harvesting is not required, as we will provide the necessary technical background.
Your main responsibility will be to improve the mechanical reliability, performance and manufacturability of our existing and emerging products, helping us transform prototypes into reliable products ready for manufacturing.
Key responsibilities include:- Mechanical CAD design and optimisation of structures, components, enclosures and assemblies.
- Hands-on prototyping, assembly and testing of mechanical and electromechanical devices.
- Investigation of mechanical failures, structural weaknesses and vibration-related problems.
- Experimental validation and performance optimisation.
- Mechanical modelling, structural analysis and FEA where appropriate.
- Product development, including design for reliability, manufacturability and assembly.
- Working with Encortec's engineering team and external manufacturing partners to implement design improvements.
- Proven experience in mechanical engineering design and product development.
- Strong 3D CAD skills and the ability to produce manufacturing-ready designs.
- Practical experience designing, building, assembling and testing prototypes.
- Experience investigating mechanical problems and developing effective solutions.
- Strong experimental, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in structural analysis, FEA, vibration testing, electromechanical devices or design for manufacture would be advantageous. Energy-harvesting experience is not essential.
We are looking for a practical, experienced engineer who can take ownership of engineering challenges and deliver measurable improvements to our products.
You should be comfortable working through the complete product development process:
A combination of strong mechanical design skills, hands-on testing experience and the ability to turn prototypes into reliable, manufacturable products is essential.
Regular on-site work in Exeter is required.
