About you
We are looking for someone with a strong interest in the historic environment, heritage data and digital mapping. You may be a recent graduate or early-career professional in archaeology, heritage, planning, geography, GIS or a related subject, with an interest in how heritage information is used within the local planning system.
You will need to be accurate, organised and comfortable working with detailed records. You should have some experience of GIS or digital mapping, or be able to demonstrate that you can quickly develop these skills. You will be confident using information from different sources, identifying inconsistencies, recording decisions clearly and following an agreed methodology.
This role would suit someone who enjoys careful, evidence-based research and wants to develop practical experience in local authority heritage, planning data and digital systems. You will receive appropriate training and will work with support from planning and heritage colleagues, including technical oversight from the Council’s Heritage Officer.
About the roleThis is a temporary casual opportunity within Exeter City Council’s City Development service, supporting a focused project to improve the Council’s listed building records and associated digital mapping.
The role will involve reviewing and improving listed building data, using HMLR Migration Helper and other sources such as the National Heritage List for England, Council GIS records, mapping, aerial imagery and land charges information. You will help create and refine spatial records where required, record key information and confidence levels, and support the preparation of the completed dataset for transfer into the Uniform Listed Building module.
The work will support planning, land charges and digital planning requirements, including the Council’s preparation for local land charges migration and future digital publication.
You will work within an agreed methodology, with training and support from planning and heritage colleagues, including technical oversight from the Council’s Heritage Officer.
About the teamThe role sits within the City Development service, specifically within the Development Management team focused on major planning applications. The team plays a key role in shaping growth and place across Exeter, working on complex and high-profile development proposals.
The team comprises experienced planning officers alongside specialist input in urban design, landscape, heritage and ecology, and takes pride in achieving high-quality design outcomes. There is a strong emphasis on collaboration, with planners and specialists working closely together to ensure that development proposals are considered in a holistic way and that the right balance is struck between growth and the protection and enhancement of the city’s historic and natural environment.
