About

the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Band 6 Physiotherapist to join the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust as a Team Lead Physiotherapist within Acute Neurology and Medicine. This 12‑month fixed‑term, part‑time (22.5 hours per week) role offers the chance to provide clinical leadership and specialist physiotherapy expertise to patients admitted with a new diagnosis or relapse of a neurological condition, patients post‑neurosurgery, and those presenting with acute medical illness.

The post holder will also play a key role in the management of people living with Parkinson’s disease and older adults admitted under the Health of Older People (HfOP) service.

Working closely with the Team Lead Occupational Therapists, the post holder will help deliver a high‑quality, interdisciplinary inpatient service and will also provide specialist clinical expertise to neurology and medical patients who are outlined to other wards, ensuring continuity and quality of care across the Trust.

The post holder will manage a varied and complex caseload, including patients with a wide range of impairments and functional deficits following acute deterioration or new presentation. Responsibilities include comprehensive assessment, development and delivery of individualised acute rehabilitation plans, and close liaison with the multidisciplinary team to support safe and timely discharge or onward referral within the patient pathway. The role also includes management of acute respiratory presentations and tracheostomy care for post‑surgical patients.

This role carries an expectation to lead and support a team of rotational Band 5 physiotherapists, students and support staff, taking responsibility for induction, training, supervision and ongoing competency development. Effective caseload prioritisation, maintaining a strong evidence base in line with national guidance, and contributing to service monitoring using outcomes such as patient satisfaction data is essential.

The role also involves wider Therapy Department responsibilities, with some flexibility to support other wards when required. Participation in on‑call, weekend and bank holiday working is an essential part of the role.

This is a fixed‑term contract until 30 April 2027. For current NHS employees this post could be a secondment opportunity.

Working Pattern: Wednesday – Friday 08:15 – 16:30 (Weekends, bank holidays and on‑calls on a rota basis)
