We are looking for a qualified Rehabilitation Officer (Visual Impairment) to join our Countywide Sensory Team. Based in Exeter, this is a rewarding opportunity to support individuals with a visual and / or dual sensory impairment to live independently, confidently, and safely within their communities.
Working with adults who are blind, partially sighted or have dual sensory impairment, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality rehabilitation services that empower people to achieve their personal goals.
You will carry out assessments and identify and deliver outcome focused rehabilitation interventions to enable adults with a visual impairment and dual sensory loss to live independently. You will also provide professional support and advice alongside specific activities such as demonstrating equipment and delivering daily living skills and mobility training.
You will have a sound understanding of the emotional and social care needs of people with visual impairment, and will possess good communication skills. The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for this post, as is managing difficult or complex issues with tact, persuasion and sensitivity.
You will manage your own caseload within the sensory team but will receive specialist supervision and opportunities to develop your skills.
It is expected that the post holder will have a high degree of confidence and motivation whilst being flexible to work across a diverse area, within a multi-professional network. This post will require an Enhanced DBS.
About the RoleAs a Rehabilitation Officer, you will:
- Assess the needs of individuals with visual impairments in their homes and communities
- Design and deliver personalised rehabilitation programmes
- Provide training in:
- Orientation and mobility (including long cane skills)
- Daily living skills (e.g., cooking, personal care, home management)
- Use of assistive technology and low vision aids
- Support individuals to access education, employment, and social opportunities
- Work collaboratively with families, carers, healthcare professionals, and partner organisations
- Promote independence, choice, and dignity in all aspects of your work
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to service development

You will have:
- A recognised qualification in Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment)
- Experience of working with blind or partially sighted people
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- The ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload
- Ability to travel around the county of Devon, including rural areas.
