General Description

The University of Exeter is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in Environmental Intelligence, focusing on the application of artificial intelligence to address challenges at the intersection of climate change and human health. This interdisciplinary project is part of Exeter’s Environmental Intelligence research initiative, which integrates expertise in data science, environmental science, and health research.

The studentship will involve developing advanced AI and machine learning models to analyse complex environmental and health datasets. The research aims to generate insights into how environmental changes influence human health outcomes and to support the development of predictive tools for policy and decision‑making.

The successful candidate will be based within a dynamic and collaborative research environment, benefiting from access to world‑class facilities and supervision from leading experts across multiple disciplines. The programme includes advanced research training, opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, and engagement with external stakeholders.

The studentship covers tuition fees and provides a tax‑free stipend at the UKRI rate for the duration of the programme. Additional funding may be available to support research costs, training, and conference attendance.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicants should hold, or be expected to obtain, a first‑class or upper second‑class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as Data Science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant subject is desirable but not essential.
  • International applicants are eligible, subject to meeting English language requirements.
Required Expertise/Skills
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Experience or interest in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or data science.
  • Programming experience (e.g., Python, R, or similar).
  • Interest in environmental science, climate change, or health‑related research.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary setting.
  • Strong communication and research skills.
