Job Description & How to Apply Below
  • Are you an experienced Care Worker, ready to take the next step in leading a team?
  • Are you passionate about creating a caring and nurturing environment that promotes development and positive outcomes for young people?
  • Have you got experience in BSL or can you adapt your communication method to work with Deaf people?
  • Do you have experience working with children and young people with complex needs?

We’re seeking a Shift Leader for our Residential Care provision, to join our inspiring team in supporting our students aged 9-25. You’ll be part of a team supported by our Head of Care and Deputy Care Manager, leading our skilled care teams to ensure our 37 bed residential flats at the academy are well run. You’ll be skilled in leading a team of staff, creating a positive team culture, and ensuring high levels of care to our young people.

You’ll support our safe culture, ensuring processes and records are managed promptly and accurately, including safeguarding and the supervision of your team. You’ll also be ensuring that all that we do enables our young people to thrive. The residential care team is a mix of hearing and Deaf staff, who work together to give the best outcomes for students.

You’ll be supporting our young people who live in our Academy Residential Home to develop their independent living skills, as well as organising social activities, for example, activities in the local community, trips to the beach, cinema or bowling, as well as trips further afield. Our students spend their day in our School or College, some also doing work placements or qualifications elsewhere, after which they return to our residential care flats.

The shift pattern for this role is therefore outside of 'school hours'.

Here at the Deaf Academy we have a unique culture.

Student and employee development is at the core of what we do.

We inspire the next generation to do incredible things. We’re looking for extraordinary people to join us and help shape our future. Working with us is more than just a job. You’ll have access to fantastic benefits and receive invaluable training to develop your career.

Shift Pattern

There are 2 teams that you may be placed in, each team works 42 hours per week, details of which can be discussed further at interview:

  • 2 teams that share a 2-week rota including weekends (working some evenings including sleep-ins, and 1 in every 2 weekends during the term)
  • a team that work Monday to Friday across morning and afternoon/evening hours.
Our support to you
  • A progressive pay scale that recognises your qualifications and experience
  • Weekly staff CPD and development sessions
  • Fully funded BSL training and in‑house lessons
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity pay
  • Life Assurance
  • Free onsite parking
  • Subsidised lunches for £2.50
  • 13 weeks of holiday (rare in care roles!)
  • A collaborative, inclusive and inspiring culture
  • Progression opportunities and specialist training
  • A beautiful coastal location close to the beach

* This position is working during the academy's term time, plus an additional 5 training days. The minimum salary for this role with no sleep-in rate applied is £28,470 pa (this would apply to those only working the Mon-Fri shift pattern). The salary including sleep-ins may be up to £32,650 pa (this includes payment for the maximum amount of sleep-ins possible for those working on full shift pattern), or £33,705 pa for thoseat top of the pay scale.
