Term Research Assistant Professor of Agriculture and Horticulture

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is a leading research university in the circumboreal north, focusing on agricultural production in a changing climate. This role is located in Fairbanks with the Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension (IANRE) and has access to research farms in Fairbanks, Delta‑Junction, and Palmer, and the Georgeson Botanical Garden. IANRE partners with industry stakeholders, hosts conferences, and runs programs such as the Master Gardener training.

• Conduct applied research on agricultural and horticultural crop production and markets, including variety testing, practice development, and innovation for cold‑climate challenges.
• Collaborate with colleagues, industry partners, and field representatives to design, implement, and evaluate applied research programs.
• Communicate research results through reports, peer‑reviewed journals, and public outreach, including publishing user‑friendly cultivation methods and presenting to diverse audiences.
• Participate in extension activities: update the Master Gardener Manual, maintain the Canvas course, and support extension offices in managing volunteer programs.
• Publish extension materials and provide outreach on topics of agriculture and horticulture.
• Write interdisciplinary grant proposals with faculty, post‑docs, graduate, and undergraduate students; pursue additional funding to complement base tasks.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds and collaborate with faculty to evaluate and develop research strategies.
• Serve the institute, university, and profession through self‑governance, planning, administration, and representation on committees and professional societies.

• Ph.D. in Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field with a demonstrated record of research excellence and ability to develop collaborations.
• Or M.S. in Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field combined with a history of successful grant acquisition for research.

• Full‑time, term‑funded faculty position (9‑month term, possible extension to 12 months).
