What You Will Be Doing:Intermediate (Engineering Assistant
2)
- Leads several Highway Engineering Technicians in the Northern Region Construction Laboratory, supporting over 30 projects annually across Alaska’s largest region.
- Works directly with geological, design, and construction professionals in the Arctic construction industry to ensure quality materials testing and documentation.
- Manages, calibrates, and maintains field and laboratory testing equipment while gaining technical and leadership experience with diverse civil construction materials from across Alaska.
Advanced (Engineering Assistant
3)
- Independently leads the Northern Region Construction Laboratory and Field Laboratory Equipment Program, providing technical direction and training to technicians serving over 30 regional projects.
- Collaborates with geological, design, and construction experts to investigate testing discrepancies, improve procedures, and advance AASHTO accreditation for the laboratory.
- Oversees calibration, maintenance, and suitability evaluations of testing equipment, ensuring regional compliance and consistent quality assurance standards.

WorkingEnvironment:
This position is based in Fairbanks at the DOT&PF complex on Peger Road, where design, construction, maintenance, and support staff are all within walking distance. The Materials Laboratory offers a collaborative work environment where you’ll engage with Laboratory and Quality Control Managers, Highway Contractors, Project Engineers, and Field Materials Technicians. Employees have opportunities to attend winter meetings and conferences in Juneau and Anchorage, gaining valuable professional development and networking experience.
Occasional out-of-state travel also allows you to expand your skills and build connections across the industry. Travel to field sites by snow machine or ATV to be expected.
The Materials team is close-knit, hardworking, and down-to-earth. We tackle challenges together, host summer BBQs, and wear our best flannel every day of the week… because doing good work is better when it’s done in flannel! This position also offers great opportunities for growth and hands‑on experience, with flexible staffing at either the Engineering Assistant 2 or 3 level. If you start as an EA2, you can move up to EA3 once you’ve obtained WAQTC certification and gained the necessary skills and experience—no need to reapply.
