Position Summary

Position Title:

Fairbanks Donor Service Technician

Department:

Perform screenings and phlebotomy of blood donors, including vitals, health history questions, and blood collection.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Register potential blood donors at the facility or on mobile drives.
  • Review Donor History Forms (DHF) for completeness and consult with RN/Medical Director as needed.
  • Perform vital sign checks and finger stick for hematocrit, and conduct confidential donor interviews.
  • Verify donors have read and understood pre/post donation instructions and the AIDS information sheet.
  • Label specimen tubes and blood donation bags according to donation type.
  • Complete donation procedure per standard operating procedures, observe for adverse reactions, and treat as needed.
  • Maintain proficiency in all donor processing areas.
  • Recruit and schedule potential blood donors.
  • Conduct daily, monthly, and quarterly quality control procedures per SOPs.
  • Maintain open communication with supervisors and support services.
  • Perform duties in compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies, including OSHA and cGMP.
  • Work cooperatively with staff to ensure quality product and customer service.
  • Maintain donor and employee confidentiality.
  • Document required information on appropriate records.
  • May perform additional roles as trained, including preparing standard and special blood components, blood product distribution, and inventory maintenance.
  • Resolve customer complaints/issues immediately with relevant departments.
  • Support BBA values, quality objectives, and customer service standards.
  • Help maintain a positive image of BBA throughout the community and Alaska.
  • Promote a cooperative work environment toward objectives.

  • Maintain a high standard of courteous, enthusiastic service to internal and external customers.
  • Prioritize customer needs in face‑to‑face or telephone contact, delivering timely, accurate, professional service.

Education

Prior experience working in a blood bank preferred. Prior experience performing phlebotomy in a medical setting strongly preferred. Demonstrated work experience obtained through one of the approved certification processes.

Experience

Minimum one year of phlebotomy experience preferred, preferably in a fast‑paced, highly regulated environment.

Certificates, Licenses, Etc.

Minimum: CPR;
First Aid;
Current Driver’s License.

Preferred:
National Phlebotomy Certification;
Certified Medical Assistant;
Certified Nursing Assistant;
Emergency Medical Technician. Other certifications will be evaluated individually. Prior military or blood‑banking experience may be considered as a substitute.

Work Environment
  • Potential hazard due to exposure to blood or other infectious materials.
  • Blood Bank of Alaska follows OSHA Blood‑Borne Pathogens Standards.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
