Medical Laboratory Scientist at Tanana Chiefs Conference (Health Services)

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to the TCC Cheghwtsen model of service and guiding principle, which requires providing timely and effective service and interacting with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion, and empathy.
  • Perform a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in all sections of the laboratory (chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, specimen dispatch).
  • Follow established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on all instruments; implement and monitor daily quality control, advise on actions when values are out of range, and document all corrective action.
  • Collect blood specimens from patients; evaluate specimens for suitability and notify physicians of rejected specimens.
  • Maintain all record‑keeping systems in compliance with established procedures; enter and verify results using the laboratory information system.
  • Assist, as instructed, in orientation of new employees and other medical personnel; participate in quality improvement projects in the lab, Health Center, and rural villages.
  • Share after‑hours on‑call and weekend coverage on a rotational basis; respond in case of internal or external disasters.
  • Assist the lead technologist in administrative duties when requested; act as lab supervisor in the lead technologist’s absence.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to specimen collection and result interpretation.
  • Assess knowledge and skills of department staff in growth and developmental stages, specimen collection, and result interpretation.
  • Build effective, supportive relationships with co‑workers and internal/external customers; use positive interpersonal skills to promote team success and laboratory/health center goals.
  • Support moderate complexity and point‑of‑care testing in sub‑regional clinics and villages as needed.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and confidentiality.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution.
  • MLS (ASPC) certification or equivalent; non‑certified new graduates eligible with requirement to obtain MLS certification within one year of graduation and pass core competency examinations annually.
  • Must pass a background check pursuant to the federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act and State of Alaska background check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and understanding of universal precautions and infection control practices; pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations regarding health care.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of professional medical technology/clinical laboratory science principles, practices, concepts, and theories.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures and principles of performance improvement.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
  • Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.
Physical Demands
  • May need to spend long periods of time sitting or standing, lift up to 40 pounds occasionally, and travel from site to site (including small aircraft).
  • May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous materials, and requires good color discernment.
