Position: Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 2 - White Mountain Experienced Crew Member (PCNs 10-N17084-89)

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, White Mountain Crew, is recruiting for multiple long-term non-permanent experienced crew members - Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 2s in Fairbanks, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing

Primary duties include wildland fire suppression, chainsaw operations, water pump operations, burnout and backfiring, line digging, and safely working with and around fire mitigation equipment. During fuel reduction tasks, crew members will perform pile burning, felling and removal of hazardous trees, and guide lower-level technicians. When not on assignment, crew members must maintain readiness and be available throughout the fire season.

The Working Environment

Based in Fairbanks, AK, this role requires travel throughout Alaska and other states. Crews may be called to remote locations, work 16‑hour shifts, and operate for up to 14–21 days with varied terrain and weather conditions.

Position‑Specific Competencies
  • Fire Management:
    Knowledge of fire concepts, behavior, ecology, prescribed fire strategies, detection, prevention, suppression, and integration with natural resource management.
  • First Response:
    Knowledge of emergency management methods, first aid, rescue techniques, and threat assessments.
  • Public Safety & Security:
    Knowledge of security operations, occupational health and safety, investigation techniques, and protective regulations.
  • Risk Management:

    Knowledge of risk assessment and mitigation tools and procedures.
  • Incident Management:
    Knowledge of tactical, technological, and procedural approaches to incident protection and prioritization.
Required Experience and Qualifications

Six months of trainee or entry‑level wildland fire fighting or forestry field experience is required, typically met by service as a Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 1 with the State of Alaska or an equivalent role. A National Incident Qualification System Red Card is required; no substitution is accepted. Education may substitute for field experience: 3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of work experience;

completed coursework in forestry or fire science must be accompanied by transcripts or a certified equivalency statement.
