Summary
This position transports children to and from school as well as on field trips in a Class C, passenger bus. The position is responsible for assisting with planning bus routes, performing bus maintenance, and providing a Head Start-focused mobile learning environment that is safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate for preschool children. This position may also be assigned to ride the bus as a monitor.
Job Duties
- Transports children between their homes and school in a safe and timely manner following a pre-determined route.
- Transports children to field trips and assists in supervising children during activities.
- Assists children with boots, jackets, and accessories; helps children with seating and guides children to and from classrooms.
- Ensures safety and maintenance inspections of the bus are complete and timely.
- Performs daily pre/post trip inspections of all buses.
- Ensures bus is serviced and fueled appropriately.
- Provides bus monitor training, evacuation drills, and orientation to families.
- Communicates effectively with children, families, staff, and the public, resolving conflicts when necessary.
- Cleans the bus interior and exterior, including windows and seats.
- Maintains bus storage area/garage.
- Keeps records on travel, mileage, and maintenance.
- Assists with bus route planning and communicates schedule changes.
- Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, including Head Start standards.
- Works well under pressure, demonstrating cooperative behavior and respecting diverse cultures.
- Participates in training, staff meetings, and adheres to licensing regulations.
- Acts as a positive role model and maintains confidentiality.
- May provide lunch or bio break coverage and perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Valid Alaska CDL, Class C with school bus endorsement.
- Medical examination certificate (biannual).
- Experience in bus driving, familiarity with local routes, safety inspections, and documentation.
- Strong communication, organization, and cultural sensitivity skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid Alaska CDL, Class C with school bus endorsement.
- Biannual medical certification.
- At least 6 months bus driving experience, with annual training.
- Completion of Infant/Toddler CPR and First Aid within 30 days of hire.
- Experience working with Alaska Native populations preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Head Start or early childhood programs.
- Two years of bus driving experience with children, CDL with school bus endorsement.
