Lifeguard (Opener) — YMCA of Greater Dayton

Location:

Fairborn YMCA, Fairborn, OH

Part-Time/Non-Exempt • $12.00-$14.40/Hour
• Weekday opening hours with a differential for 6:00 a.m. to 10/11:00 a.m.

Free Certification/Training provided by the YMCA (see details below).

Responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Responds to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. This position will also assist with swim instruction when needed.

• Maintains constant observation of the pool area.
• Ensures safety by communicating and enforcing pool rules, policies, and guidelines at participants’ comprehension level.
• Ensures safety by checking for hazardous conditions and ensuring all safety equipment is properly placed and in working condition.
• May be required to perform the duties of Swim Instructor.
• Responds to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, including first aid or CPR; completes incident and accident reports as required.
• Follows all aquatics employee rules, dress code, policies, and guidelines.
• Maintains and records accurate records including pool chemical readings, first aid kit supplies, and pool equipment.
• Maintains a clean environment by following and recording proper cleaning procedures.
• Inspects pool and rescue equipment for safety hazards, damage, or wear.
• Sets up and stores equipment and assists other employees with event setup.
• Practices rescue and fitness drills regularly.
• Promotes aquatics and other YMCA programs.
• Communicates any suggestions to improve the aquatics facility.
• Physically performs all skills required of a lifeguard.
• Heard noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and around the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Remains alert with no lapses of consciousness.
• Sees and observes all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Must be at least 15 years of age.
• Currently hold or possess the ability to participate in and achieve certification for the following:
  Professional rescuer, First Aid, and Lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross or YMCA, Starguard, Ellis that can be crossed over to American Red Cross.
• Minimum of six months or more of related lifesaving experience preferred.

Certification requirements include CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and must hold current Lifeguard certification through the YMCA or American Red Cross.

• Passing the physical competency test includes: swim-tread-swim sequence without resting, jump into deep water and submerge, resurface and swim 150 yards using front crawl or breaststroke or a combination; back to surface and tread for 2 minutes; swim 50 yards; complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds; surface dive to 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object; return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point, exiting the water without using a ladder or steps.
  
  Goggles allowed for the swim, not for the timed event. 10 lb object must be placed on the deck with the swimmer exiting the water appropriately.
