Position: Abdominal /Kidney Transplant Surgeon

Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is currently seeking an ASTS fellowship trained abdominal transplant surgeon to join the abdominal transplant surgical team. The successful candidate will provide clinical and surgical care in the area of kidney and pancreas transplant within the Inova Health System. Working directly with the transplant surgeons and nephrologists who will assist in the care of patients with end stage renal disease.

Maintains overall responsibility for the care of kidney, kidney/pancreas, pancreas patients and living kidney donors. The Transplant Surgeon will be a member of the Surgery Service Line and the Inova medical group.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides quality care to kidney, kidney/pancreas and pancreas transplant recipients and living donors as defined by a one year survival rate equal to or above the expected outcomes as calculated by UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) for patient mix. Short term, statistical trends and volume issues will be disregarded when evaluating program outcomes.
  • Responsible for quality selection of transplant candidates and donors.
  • Provides quality care to kidney/pancreas transplant recipients.
  • Assists with the collaborative practice committee and assists with clinical decision-making
  • Rounds on hospitalized patients that are affiliated with kidney/pancreas transfer program.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates clinical standards, practice guidelines, pathways and policies/procedures
  • Direct and coordinate patient protocols for kidney/pancreas patients as necessary.
  • Participates actively as requested in the surgical residency teaching program and in educational programs conducted by the hospital, including but not limited to providing supervision and training to residents and fellows, and performing such other teaching functions with the hospital as the hospital may deem necessary or desirable.
  • Supports marketing efforts to foster growth of the kidney and kidney/pancreas and pancreas transplant programs.
  • Participate as required in risk management and quality assurance activities. The focus of the quality assurance activities will be on performance improvement not peer review.
  • Participate as requested with regulatory, licensure and certification review bodies.
  • Participate as requested in medical staff committees, taskforce, conferences and other work groups initiated to enhance quality patient care and the operations of the hospital.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:Graduate of accredited MD or DO program, Completion of a General Surgery residency accredited by the ACGME, Completion of an ASTS-accredited Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship
  • Credentialing:Ability to be payer credentialed with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance carriers. Eligible for hospital credentialing and surgical privileges in abdominal organ transplant surgery.
  • Certification:Eligibility for full, unrestricted medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia, ability to obtain and maintain DEA registration for prescribing controlled substances in Virginia.
