Water Resources Engineer – STV

Join a thriving Mid‑Atlantic Transportation practice in Fairfax, VA. We are looking for a Water Resources Engineer to help deliver a backlog of infrastructure improvement projects for VDOT, DDOT, MDOT, and municipal clients.

This role offers opportunities to manage projects, mentor junior staff, interact directly with clients, and promote a healthy work‑life balance. It also allows you to influence transportation agencies across Virginia, Maryland, and DC.

Responsibilities
  • Provide professional design services for transportation improvement projects for VDOT, DDOT, MDOT, and other county/city agencies.
  • Develop design plans including storm drains, culverts, storm‑water management, ESD/LID facilities, and erosion and sediment control.
  • Obtain stormwater and erosion and sediment control permits.
  • Coordinate design development and provide technical direction to other design staff.
  • Collaborate with the design team to deliver quality deliverables on schedule and within budget.
  • Assist with the development of specifications, cost estimates and technical reports.
  • Establish working relationships and interface with client technical staff and project managers.
  • Mentor/support water‑resource design staff.
  • Attend project meetings with clients, sub‑consultants, and the project team.
Required Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive water‑resource design experience.
  • VA/DC Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Strong knowledge of VDOT drainage design, hydrology, and hydraulic analysis preferred.
  • VA municipal client experience is a plus.
  • Experience with roadway water‑resource engineering: storm drains, culverts, storm‑water management, ESD/LID, erosion and sediment control, hydraulic analysis, environmental permitting.
  • Knowledge of floodplain analysis, watershed modeling, hydraulic scour, dam breach, stream restoration is considered a plus.
  • Proficiency in hydrologic and hydraulic software such as GISHydro, TR‑55, TR‑20, HY‑8, HEC‑RAS;
    Hydro

    CAD, SWMM, Flow Master a plus.
  • Proficient with Micro Station, AutoCAD, Civil 3D.
  • Experience with Micro Station Inroads/Open Roads modeling and ESRI ArcGIS preferred.
  • Familiarity with NPDES permit requirements and Chesapeake Bay TMDL.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to fulfill essential job functions in a safe manner.
