The Position
Under administrative direction, plans, organizes and directs daily operations within the County Counsel’s Office; serves as a member of both the County's and the department’s management team.
As the assistant department director of the County Counsel’s Office, this position combines management duties, supervisory duties, and legal practice including litigation of highly complex and/or controversial administrative and civil matters which may have a substantial impact on the organization.

This individual will bring a broad range of legal experience and the ability to provide thoughtful, practical advice to elected boards, commissions, and County departments.

Progressively responsible experience in civil litigation with some supervisory experience which demonstrates possession of and competency in requisite knowledge and abilities.
Incumbents are to maintain active membership in good standing with the California State Bar Association.

Qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre‑scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self‑schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending on the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination listed.
All potential new hires and employees considered for promotion to management, confidential positions or unrepresented positions will be subject to a background and reference check after contingent job offer is accepted. These provisions are subject to change.
