Position SummaryThe Substitute teacher is expected to facilitate instruction, manage classrooms, and support student learning in the absence of the regular teacher. Responsibilities include taking attendance, following established lesson plans, maintaining a safe and productive learning environment, and ensuring continuity in students’ education across subjects. Strong communication, attention to detail, and classroom management skills are essential.
The Substitute Teacher at Notre Dame Prep also serves as a role model aligned with the school’s Catholic mission, fostering a positive and respectful classroom culture that reflects the values of the Notre Dame and Sacred Heart University communities.
Instructional Support- Implement prepared lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the regular teacher.
- Deliver lessons in a manner consistent with the academic standards and teaching practices of the school.
- Use provided resources and technology to engage students and support learning.
- Take attendance and ensure all classroom procedures are followed.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and respectful classroom environment.
- Set and reinforce behavioral expectations aligned with school policies.
- Respond effectively to classroom disruptions and follow appropriate disciplinary protocols.
- Foster a positive learning environment that encourages participation, respect, and academic effort.
- Provide clarification or assistance to students as needed during instruction.
- Communicate any significant student concerns to appropriate school personnel.
- Work in coordination with department chairs, administrative staff, and other faculty as needed.
- Leave a summary of the day’s activities and any relevant student observations for the returning teacher.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with students, staff, and families.
- Support and uphold the Catholic identity, mission, and values of Notre Dame High School.
- Promote a learning environment grounded in respect, service, and academic integrity.
- At least 1-3 years of teaching experience at the high school level preferred, but not required.
- Strong knowledge of the subject matter and the ability to communicate it clearly to students.
- Effective classroom management techniques and the ability to maintain a positive learning environment.
- Proficiency in using educational technology to enhance instruction.
- Strong communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Passion for teaching and fostering student growth academically, socially, and emotionally.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to effectively plan and deliver lessons and assess student progress.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers, staff, and administrators.
- A commitment to fostering a Catholic environment of respect, faith, and service within the school community.
- Commitment to professional growth and continuous improvement in teaching practices.
- A positive and enthusiastic approach to engaging students in the classroom and in extracurricular activities.
Must be flexible to teach across a variety of student needs and levels.
