The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), is currently accepting applications from qualified individuals for a Transportation Materials Technician 3 position in the Division of Construction Operations, Material Evaluation and Specification Unit (MESU) for District 3 Laboratory located in New Haven, CT.

THE ROLE

The Transportation Materials Technician 3 position resides in the Aggregates Section of MESU. The role involves working lead responsibilities supporting the Department’s statewide materials evaluation, qualification, and testing programs. This includes:

  • Providing day-to-day direction and oversight to lower level MESU staff performing materials testing, sampling, and inspection work.
  • Performing and reviewing testing and inspection activities involving aggregates, hydraulic-cement concrete, bituminous materials, and related construction materials.
  • Conducting aggregate qualification evaluations, concrete assurance testing, coordinating and conducting ready‑mix concrete plant inspections, aggregate source approvals, and ongoing materials testing and inspection activities applicable to the quality assurance programs for materials acceptance and independent assurance.
  • Supporting construction project personnel regarding laboratory policies and procedures and/or problems with materials, verifying compliance, and ensuring proper documentation of test data.
  • Reviewing and recommending improvements to MESU testing and reporting methods.
  • Overseeing lower level MESU staff use of the Department’s construction/materials systems, including AASHTOWare Project Construction & Materials (AWP), Site Manager, and the Construction Document Management System (COMPASS).
  • Maintaining and calibrating equipment and assisting higher‑level employees with purchasing of materials testing equipment.
  • Preparing test reports, maintaining records, and ensuring standard operating procedures are met within the unit.
  • Performing related duties as required to support the mission of the Division of Construction Operations.
