Traffic Engineer Technician/Planner (Temporary)

Job Summary: This 6-month temporary classification will collect traffic data, perform field inspections of traffic control devices (signals, signs, lighting and pavement markings), manage databases, address public complaints, and assist engineer department staff with field studies and reports, using software like AutoCAD and ArcGIS for planning and implementing safety and traffic flow improvements. This temporary classification will also visit work sites, collect field data, and monitor construction work.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Engineering Manager, who oversees program progress, and under the direct supervision of an assigned employee who provides daily direction and evaluates work performance.
Supervision Exercised: None.
Examples Of Essential Duties- Assists the Engineering Manager and Engineering Department personnel with various tasks and projects.
- Communicates and documents field observations with Engineering staff.
- Analyzes and evaluates field measurements of streets and intersections.
- Develops intersection diagrams and other drawings in Auto-Cad or another computer graphic format.
- Assists engineer with design, compiles quantities and completes all drafting and plan reproduction.
- Completes independent assignments as directed.
- Performs accurate field measurements and related fieldwork activities and ensures pavement markings and signs are in compliance with accepted standards.
- Assists in preparation of reports, summaries, and other documentation as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Knowledge of GIS, AutoCAD, Microsoft office suite and traffic and engineering terminology.
- Knowledge of principles, theories, and concepts related to the engineering discipline and the ability to apply them effectively in practical settings.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, with the ability to create, edit, format, and organize documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Skill in the use of Word and Excel, including tables, formulas, templates, and document formatting, as well as other departmental technologies.
- Ability to understand and apply traffic engineering terminology.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in traffic engineering, drafting, transportation planning or a closely related field and one (1) year of paraprofessional traffic engineering work or equivalent levels of experience in a technical field and/or office traffic engineering paraprofessional work such as traffic signal operation, design and inspection, traffic engineering data collection, investigations and studies, work zone traffic control designs and inspections, and surveying and drafting.
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position will be considered.
- Temporary assignment up to 6 months working 8:00 AM- 4:00 PM |Monday-Friday |35 hours per week based on workload/departmental needs.
- $21-22.00 per hour
- Confidential, non-bargaining unit, non-exempt position
- The Temporary employee will not be used to displace, eliminate, or cause the termination or layoff of any Bargaining Unit employee. The temporary employees will not be hired to replace or supplant a full-time bargaining unit position. The six (6) month period may be extended by mutual agreement. Temporary employees are not entitled to any benefits.
