Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire Automotive Mechanics. The successful candidate will under direct supervision, perform skilled mechanical work in the preventative maintenance and repair of all vehicles including heavy and highway equipment utilized by eight (8) construction crews performing highway repairs throughout the state on awarded projects of the Day Labor Section.

Essential Functions
  • Performs preventative maintenance, repairs, and reconditions various types of heavy gasoline and diesel-powered construction equipment including cranes, motor graders, tractors end-loaders, bituminous distributors, air compressors, pumps, automobiles, and trucks.
  • Rebuilds brake systems, repairs truck bodies and frames, and steam cleans areas in need of inspection or repair.
  • Repairs and rebuilds air hammers, drills, chain saws, and other small equipment.
  • Drives a truck to make service calls on equipment being used on field construction projects to perform preventative maintenance or repairs.
  • Utilizes a forklift truck to load and/or unload heavy items.
  • Prepares time reports and work orders that include labor and repair parts in detail.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school, or coursework in vehicle repair and maintenance, or completion of an approved training course.
  • Requires experience necessary to qualify as a skilled mechanic.
  • Requires a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class

  • Prefers extensive knowledge of mechanical hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Prefers ability to work well with others.
  • Prefers working knowledge of standard vehicle repair and maintenance practices and techniques, occupational hazards and applicable safety measures.
  • Prefers skill in the use of tools and the operation of the machines and equipment employed in motor repair and adjustment.
  • Prefers skill and ability to work from sketches, drawings, and blueprints as well as oral and written instructions.
  • Prefers ability to locate and adjust mechanical feedbacks in motors and equipment and make necessary repairs.
  • Prefers ability to weld and perform simple blacksmith operations.
  • Prefers ability to prepare work activity reports.
  • Prefers ability to perceive objects with sharpness.
