Overview
Fairfield Parks and Recreation seeks positive, energetic professionals to provide high-quality swim lessons to the citizens of Fairfield, CT. Water Safety Instructors ensure a safe, fun, and educational environment for participants of all ages and ability levels. Instructors will lead group swim lessons (infant through adult) at Jennings Beach and Lake Mohegan. Under the supervision of the Recreation/Aquatics Coordinator and Assistant Waterfront Directors, instructors are expected to be certified WSIs, prepared to deliver lessons that align with American Red Cross standards
.
- Provide safe, engaging, and effective swim instruction for children of varying ages and abilities.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet individual learning needs and use positive reinforcement to encourage skill development and good behavior.
- Ensure each child achieves at least one goal during every class session.
- Demonstrate and utilize equipment correctly while incorporating creativity and enthusiasm into instruction.
- Follow Fairfield Parks & Recreation aquatics policies, covering all lesson components with proper teaching techniques.
- Maintain constant supervision of participants, ensuring safety at all times.
- Keep children active and engaged throughout the class to maximize learning and enjoyment.
- Clearly communicate beach rules and swimming concepts at a level appropriate to each child's age and comprehension.
- Provide regular feedback to both children and parents regarding progress and skill development.
- Inform supervisors promptly of any concerns, incidents, or program improvement suggestions.
- Prepare structured lesson plans and maintain accurate attendance and skill records.
- Complete and distribute progress reports in a timely manner.
- Create a positive, supportive learning environment while maintaining effective class management.
- Set up all necessary equipment before class and return it properly after use.
- Be knowledgeable of and ready to implement emergency procedures when needed.
- Report any broken or damaged equipment to a supervisor.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and required training sessions.
- Minimum 16 years of age at time of employment.
- Must hold the following American Red Cross Certifications
:- Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid
- Waterfront Skills Only valid when accompanied by a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) certificate
- Completion of Water Safety Instructor Course (or certification similar to WSI)
- Ability to effectively teach and evaluate swimmers of all ages and abilities according to Red Cross standards.
- Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain professional, patient, and adaptable in varying conditions.
Teaching swim lessons is preferred but not required.
