Summary of Primary FunctionThe Clinical Nursing Student – Summer provides direct patient care under the guidance of the Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the organization. The program is a temporary, time‑limited summer experience designed to provide clinical practice and exposure. The role is primarily a job‑shadowing position that may incorporate aspects of clinical care at the RN’s delegation.
EssentialJob Functions
- Support the RN in applying the nursing process under direction.
- Develop critical‑thinking skills through collaboration with the RN to ensure quality patient care delivery.
- Seek out educational opportunities related to nursing practice and critical thinking.
- Shadow the RN to learn the role in the context of the care team and delivery of patient care.
- Provide basic patient care including personal hygiene, vital sign recording, mobility assistance, and unit‑based specialty duties in accordance with school of nursing, facility, and state board of nursing regulations.
- Act as liaison between patient and nurse, reporting changes or concerns.
- Provide high‑level customer service to patients, families, visitors, and all employees.
- Maintain accurate, precise, timely documentation when applicable.
- Participate in hand‑off/report of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs.
- Perform delegated tasks once competency has been validated.
- Communicate clearly with other members of the healthcare team.
- Follow directions of the healthcare team.
- Understand and adhere to patient and healthcare safety standards and regulations.
- Follow infection prevention and transmission‑based precautions.
- Participate in team dynamics and patient data collection and documentation.
- Assist with feeding, hydration, nutrition, bowel and bladder elimination.
- Assist with ambulation and patient mobility.
- Use clinical technology appropriately.
- Show compassionate, relationship‑based approach in care activities.
- Accountability for completion of assigned tasks.
- Escalate concerns via the chain of command.
- Demonstrate professionalism.
- High school diploma or GED (required).
- Currently enrolled in an RN nursing program and have completed program specific educational requirements with a planned/anticipated graduation date within 12 months of the summer program start (required).
- BLS (preferred).
- Recent experience in acute care and/or long‑term care facility (preferred).
Qualifications may vary per facility, please refer to program specific requirements.
EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).
