This position provides anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and under the standards of the Department of Anesthesiology and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. The CRNA administers anesthesia to patients, rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures. They provide continuous vigilant observation of patients by monitoring the patient's physical reactions to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents, and inform the anesthesiologist of any adverse conditions that potentially threaten the safety or care of the patient.

Will provide anesthetics in non-academic facilities and will be required to safely maintain a high-volume, rapid-paced environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse, and APRN (Nurse Anesthetist) in the State of West Virginia is required.
  • Board Certified or Recertified by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains excellence in airway management and usage of all airway adjuncts, e.g., Bullard, fiber optic scope, ILMA, etc.
  • Takes appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection to patients and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participates in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of patients and the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • Performs appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan such as insertion of intravenous catheters, invasive monitoring catheters according to established protocol, endotracheal intubation and extubation, and arterial punctures for blood gas interpretation.
  • Monitors patient's physical response to anesthesia and informs the anesthesiologist of any adverse conditions. Manages the anesthesia process including induction, maintenance, and emergence of general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases. Recognizes abnormal patient responses and initiates corrective measures.
  • Determines the need for additional laboratory tests and provides resuscitative care as necessary. Evaluates and manages the patient post-operatively.
  • Administers IV fluids based on the patient's medical history and surgical procedure. Administers blood products after hematocrit assessment and consultation with the anesthesiologist.
  • Appropriately documents the patient status in the anesthesia record.
  • Performs safety and performance checks on anesthesia-related equipment and verifies supplies before care. Assembles equipment and supplies if anesthesia tech is unavailable.
  • Reviews documentation for informed consent and identifies surgical site during SBAR with surgical team, participating in the surgical pause as per standards.
  • Communicates effectively with all involved in peri-operative and post-operative care.
  • Provides anesthesia care in life-threatening emergencies in the absence of an anesthesiologist.
  • Assists in teaching and evaluating newly-hired CRNAs, GRNAs, SRNAs, and medical students.
  • Responsible for controlled substances according to policies and regulations.
  • Provides anesthetics conducive to rapid turnover and high case volume.
