Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA/L) at Elmwood Healthcare - Home Health (Elmwood Home Care) will provide direct occupational therapy services to patients in their homes, supporting the rehabilitation process and helping patients achieve their maximum level of independence. The COTA/L will work under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT/R) to implement treatment plans, monitor progress, and adapt interventions based on patient needs.
Key Responsibilities:Patient Care and Therapy:
- Assist in implementing occupational therapy treatment plans designed by the Occupational Therapist (OT) to improve patients' daily living skills, mobility, and overall functional abilities.
- Provide hands‑on therapy services, including therapeutic exercises, activities of daily living (ADL) training, and adaptive techniques.
- Educate patients and their families on techniques and exercises to support ongoing therapy goals and enhance self‑management.
Assessment and Documentation:
- Conduct initial and ongoing assessments of patients’ functional abilities and needs, documenting progress and changes in condition.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date patient records, including therapy notes, progress reports, and treatment outcomes, in compliance with healthcare regulations and company policies.
- Report significant changes in patients' conditions or responses to therapy to the supervising OT.
Care Coordination:
- Collaborate with the supervising OT, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated and effective care.
- Participate in care team meetings and contribute to the development and review of patient care plans.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and caregivers to provide support, education, and guidance.
Patient and Family
Education:
- Teach patients and their families about the therapeutic processes, adaptive equipment, and strategies to improve functionality and independence.
- Provide support and encouragement to patients to help them stay motivated and engaged in their therapy.
Administrative Duties:
- Ensure all therapy services are provided in accordance with applicable regulations, company policies, and best practices.
- Assist with scheduling therapy sessions and coordinating care activities as needed.
Quality Improvement:
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with industry standards and advancements in occupational therapy.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and assist in evaluating the effectiveness of therapy interventions.
Education: Associate’s degree with Occupational Therapist Assistant certification from an accredited program.
Licensure: Current and valid Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA/L) license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA/L), preferably in a home healthcare setting.
Skills: Strong clinical assessment and therapeutic skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Certifications: CPR Certification with Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS) is required.
Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel to patients' homes within the designated service area.
