Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a detail-oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations Team. This team maintains the critical physical infrastructure that supports AWS, ensuring data center MEP systems operate at 100% availability while delivering first-class customer service to internal teams and groups within the data centers.

The Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) is responsible for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center is operating at peak efficiency. This includes planned preventative maintenance, daily corrective work, and emergency response. The CE serves as an expert technical resource, interacting with onsite Engineering Operations Technicians (EOT) and third-party vendors. They act as a singular focal point for all facility operations within a given data center and support AWS.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, including data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure customers have continual access to AWS services. We work on challenging problems with thousands of variables affecting the supply chain and are looking for talented people to help.

You will join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with teams across AWS to deliver high safety and security standards while providing scalable capacity at low cost. AWS promotes an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Key responsibilities
  • Act as the primary escalation point for all facilities-related issues. Oversee operation and management of routine and emergency services on critical systems (switch gear, generators, UPS, power distribution, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, building monitoring systems, etc.).
  • Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures and troubleshoot facilities within SLAs.
  • Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and coordinate with the Facility Manager to set team culture.
  • Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams.
  • May assist in building out new facilities and participate in projects to increase facility efficiency.
  • Work outside normal business hours for routine maintenance as required and respond to out-of-hours emergency calls.
  • Communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Coordinate with IT managers and business leaders to manage projects, capacity, and optimize plant safety, performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed by vendors and Amazon staff.
  • Establish building performance benchmarks, conduct analyses, and prepare reports on all aspects of critical facility operations and maintenance.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other basic administrative tools for day-to-day tasks.
Physical requirements
  • Willingness and ability to work in physically demanding conditions with reasonable accommodations.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently; participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds.
  • Maintain balance and perform construction tasks while on a ladder; continuous movement and physical activity as part of the role.
  • Work in an environment requiring provided ear protection.
The day-to-day

This role acts as the front line for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting, maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting mission-critical data center facility equipment including standby diesel generators, switch gear, UPS, PDUs, and battery systems. Mechanical equipment includes CRAHU units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water systems, air handlers, pumps, and motors, as well as fire/life safety and building automation systems. The CE directs, trains, and supports technicians and leads site/equipment-specific training exercises.

They manage projects from conception to completion, including vendor quotes and documenting results for replication at other facilities.
