Research Assistant/Associate, Biology
Overview
The MBL Ecosystems Center seeks a full-time Research Assistant I starting as soon as possible to assist with research on development and evaluation of an innovative denitrifying bioreactor for wastewater treatment. Bioreactors (pipes 60 feet long x 3 ft in diameter) will process 6000 gpd and will be held in duplicate under three temperature regimes. Responsibilities of the RA I will include collecting samples from bioreactors at the Wareham Pollution Control Facility and analyzing those samples at the Marine Biological Laboratory to determine the efficacy of the treatment.

This is a one-year position with an expected start date of July 1, 2025.
QualificationsBasic Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biology, geoscience or environmental science or engineering and relevant field and research experience. Experience with biogeochemical analyses including nutrient (e.g. ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, total dissolved nitrogen) and elemental analysis (e.g. dissolved and particulate carbon) using of spectrophotometers and automated analyzers is required. Experience evaluating basic wastewater treatment processes (e.g. BOD, coliform counts, etc.) is helpful.
Proficiency in using Excel for data entry and processing (graphing, simple statistics) is necessary. The successful applicant should also be comfortable in a wastewater treatment environment and willing to help with preparations for field work such as organizing, cleaning and maintaining gear. Applicant should have a valid drivers license and be comfortable driving a pickup truck or van.
Physical Requirements:
Willingness to work in the field during inclement weather, ability to lift 50 lbs, and to swim are required.
