Job Summary:

The Town of Falmouth is currently seeking applicants of at least 16 years of age for Seasonal Lifeguard positions that work at assigned Town-owned beaches. These positions start with a mandatory evening orientation on June 24, 2025, and work through Labor Day, 5 days/42.5 hours per week, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., including weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Applicants who cannot commit to a 5-day per week schedule are encouraged to apply and to note their availability in their application.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Seasonal Lifeguard Supervisor, the Seasonal Lifeguards are assigned to a Town-owned beach and monitor the beach and water area to ensure the safety of the public; act in emergency situations to perform rescue and first aid assistance measures up to their training level as needed until care is transferred to medical personnel; coordinate with Emergency Communications, Fire Rescue, Police, or other staff in the event of an emergency response;

enforce the beach rules and regulations; respond to questions from the public; assist with water wheelchair usage; monitor and care for Town-owned beach equipment; and perform any other related work as needed.

These positions report to Surf Drive Beach or Old Silver Beach at the start of the workday and drive or carpool to their daily assigned beach of Menauhant, Bristol, Falmouth Heights, Surf Drive, Mill Road Extension, M.B.L. Stoney, Goodwill Park, Wood Neck, Chapoquoit, Old Silver, or Megansett.

Requirements

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and be able to pass a pre-employment CORI criminal background check.
Applicants who meet the above requirements and have obtained a Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Waterfront Skills certification from the American Red Cross or an accredited program will be invited to an in-person tryout and interview to be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. A certification that is valid for 2 years can be obtained through the American Red Cross here or may be available through an applicant’s local YMCA or Boys & Girls Club.

Interested applicants who do not yet have the certification should apply and note their plan and timeframe for obtaining the certification in their application.

Pay & Benefits

The pay for the first season of employment is $19.17/hour.

Successful applicants for this position are eligible for a $400 Retention Bonus to be paid in the second paycheck in August if they meet each of the following requirements:

  • Attend the mandatory orientation and training and start working for the season on or before June 27, 2025; and
  • Commit to a schedule of at least 25.5 hours/week; and
  • Work, or has coverage for, all scheduled shifts through Monday, August 18, 2025; and
  • Submit proof of Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Waterfront Skills certification from an accredited program prior to their first day of work.

Preference Date to Apply: Friday, May 2, 2025 by 4:30 p.m. The positions will remain open until filled, but candidates who apply by this date and time will be given preference over later applications. As noted above, applicants who are at least 16 years of age and have obtained a Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Waterfront Skills certification from the American Red Cross or an accredited program will be invited to an in-person tryout and interview to be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
