Overview

Biomedical Scientist - Haematology and Blood Transfusion Band 5

The department is housed in a modern, purpose-built laboratory. The successful candidate will join a busy but friendly team and be trained in all areas of Haematology Automation, Coagulation, Haemoglobinopathy and Blood Transfusion. The Blood Sciences department uses multiple analysers and services including Antenatal and Newborn Screening for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia, and the Blood Transfusion laboratory uses the Werfen Neo Iris Blood Grouping analysers.

The department has a fully tracked Beckman Coulter DxA
5000 automated system connecting Haematology, Coagulation, Chemistry and Virology analysers. We are accredited by UKAS under ISO:15189 and are assessed for MHRA compliance. We are approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for both the registration portfolio, leading to HCPC registration and specialist portfolios.

The laboratory facilities accommodate all pathology disciplines including Blood Sciences, Bristol Genetics Laboratory, a single Bristol Cellular Pathology Service and a combined Microbiology and UK Health Security Agency service within one facility.

Responsibilities
  • Work in accordance with the Departmental Standard Operating Procedures and assist in the development and review of these as required.
  • Receive and analyse samples submitted to the department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
  • Assist in the interpretation and technical validation of analyses in accordance with SOPs.
  • Be responsible for the performance of compatibility testing and the issue of Blood and Blood Products to patients in routine and emergency situations.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Hospital Blood Banks and the stock control of Blood & Blood Products.
  • Rotate into any area of the department as required.
  • Participate fully in the department’s 24/7 rota service.
  • Prioritise the completion of urgent requests.
  • Telephone/email important results to an appropriate person when necessary.
  • Be responsible for your own work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff.
  • Validate and release results to service users as required.
  • Maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate.
  • Prepare and ensure adequate supplies of reagents and consumables.
  • Use consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health & Safety policies.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment, including maintenance records and corrective actions.
  • Process internal and external quality control samples as required.
  • Participate in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual.
  • Participate in risk management of the department, including reporting adverse incidents.
  • Assist in research and development projects as required.
  • Assist in the training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, new BMS staff, MLAs, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
  • Participate in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Undertake continued professional development.
  • Be personally responsible for maintaining HCPC Registration.
  • Participate in all other activities in the section to enable the department to maintain ISO 15189 compliance.
