Under supervision, the Building Inspector I performs structural and life safety inspections of new construction and existing commercial and residential dwellings. The Building Inspector I also provides education and information to building/home owners, contractors, engineers, etc., on the national and local safety standards, codes, and laws, including local application and enforcement of FEMA flood requirements. Incumbents are expected to have and apply a working knowledge of all applicable codes enforced within the City.
This is the first level of a two-level series, differentiated from Building Inspector II by the complexity of inspection activities. Occasionally, a Building Inspector I may perform duties of a Building Inspector II, requiring familiarity with such duties. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the life safety of building occupants through thorough inspections and code compliance.
Collaboration:
Qualifications include a minimum of two years of specialized/technical training in building inspections or a related field and at least one year of inspection experience, or five years of related experience. A journey-level trade certification is preferred, with ongoing work toward a master’s level certification. Certification must be obtained within one year of employment. A valid driver’s license is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Knowledge of building construction, codes, and laws.
- Ability to perform inspections and interpret codes.
- Proficiency in English, mathematical skills, and computer software.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
- Respect from builders and contractors for technical knowledge.
Working Conditions:
Approximately 50% of work involves physical inspections in various weather conditions, requiring climbing, lifting, and observing. The job is rated as Light Work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally.
Additional considerations include exposure to the public and pets during housing inspections, with a focus on safety and documentation.
Special Assignments:Trade-specific certifications are required for certain specialties. Inspections related to rental housing may involve legal and safety considerations, requiring detailed documentation and coordination with legal and fire officials.
