Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma and seven years of experience; or
- Successful completion of a national certifying examination specifically designed for legal assistants/paralegals which includes continuing legal education for maintenance of that certification; or
- Bachelor's degree and either one year of experience or 18 semester credit hours of legal assistant/paralegal substantive courses; or
- Graduation from an ABA approved legal assistant/paralegal program.
Valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Requires AAERT (American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers) CER (certified electronic court reporter) certification or ability to obtain within one year of job entry. A comparable certification by another state court or federal court may be substituted for the AAERT certification.
Responsibilities- Provide administrative and secretarial support to a district judge or judicial referee.
- Research, analyze, and summarize case laws, administrative rules, regulations, and judicial decisions; make a verbatim record of district and juvenile court trials, proceedings, and other matters using audio recording equipment; write court logs and note appearances and essential events.
- Assist in calendar control and scheduling.
- Serve as primary contact for judicial officer; greet visitors, screen calls and correspondence, provide information, and explain policies as appropriate.
- Act as liaison between the judicial officer and personnel from other agencies, the general public, and attorneys.
- Coordinate meetings and maintain the calendar for the judicial officer; schedule trials and other court proceedings in cooperation with the clerk of court, and inform parties of the same.
- Provide secretarial and clerical support by preparing, transcribing, and proofreading all correspondence, findings, orders, jury instructions, memorandums, or other materials.
- Perform a variety of clerical and administrative tasks including answering phones, maintaining supplies, maintaining law library, arranging appointments and travel, and preparing vouchers.
- Record court and jury trial proceedings; take court notes during hearings to identify appearances and significant events; travel to other counties as required.
- Perform clerking duties in courtroom, administer oaths, mark documents, maintain logs, and transfer records to the clerk of district court for reference.
- Perform other duties of a comparable level or type as assigned.
