Job Title: Part-Time American Indian Education Student & Family Advocate

General Definition of Work: The American Indian Education Student and Family Advocate plays a vital role in connecting Faribault Public Schools with the American Indian community. This position supports American Indian students and their families by providing guidance, advocacy and culturally grounded support as they navigate their educational journey within the district. The focus is on enhancing academic engagement while fostering cultural connections and learning opportunities.

The advocate will collaborate with staff across the district to help create a supportive, inclusive learning environment that promotes both academic success and cultural understanding. This role is guided by the Community Education & Engagement Director, the American Indian Education Plan approved by MDE, and the American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC). The position will be scheduled to work 10 hours per week, year round, at a rate of $28.07 per hour.

The term “American Indian” is used per language determined by the Minnesota Department of Education and Minnesota Indigenous Education for All and Minnesota Department of American Indian Education.

Essential Functions

  • Build strong, culturally responsive relationships with American Indian students and families.
  • Coordinate cultural programming, including drum and dance and community-led events.
  • Organize American Indian college visits, cultural field trips, and family engagement events.
  • Support AIPAC-led activities and collaborate with neighboring districts as needed.
  • Assist with logistics for workshops and guest speakers selected by AIPAC.
  • Develop and distribute outreach materials for students, families, and staff.
  • Partner with school staff to promote cultural understanding and inclusive learning environments.
  • Support student goal-setting activities and track progress toward academic and engagement goals.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, families, teachers, and district leadership.
  • Implement activities aligned with the American Indian Education Plan and AIPAC priorities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Associate's degree required or equivalent work and lived experience.
  • Proven experience working directly with American Indian communities; preferably the Dakota and/or Ojibwe peoples.
  • Strong understanding of the specific challenges and needs of American Indian students and families.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and trust with diverse populations especially within the American Indian communities.
  • Knowledge of cultural competency, equity, and inclusive practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
