Overview
The Lifeguard/Water Exercise Instructor is responsible for maintaining a safe, pleasant swimming environment; providing the necessary supervision to prevent accidents both in the water and on the pool deck area; performing rescues and responding with emergency care for accident victims. Additionally, the instructor will create and maintain a cheerful, professional, and helpful environment while serving the community with water exercise programs.
- When on duty, the first and foremost responsibility is to protect life.
- Report to work 15 minutes before scheduled time.
- Be ready, in full uniform, with proper equipment at your station when patrons arrive.
- Ensure the pool area is clean and safe.
- Do not allow patrons in the pool if there are any safety problems.
- Put out proper equipment (lane lines, lifeline, etc.).
- Report missing or broken equipment to supervisors.
- Keep your rescue tube strapped on when lifeguarding, anytime patrons are in the pool area (including the pool deck).
- Stay at your assigned post, alert and ready to act at all times.
- Refrain from unnecessary talking with the public.
- Use a loud, yet courteous voice and your whistle to provide simple, concise directions at all times.
- Know the emergency procedures and respond promptly to any emergency situation.
- Complete rescue reports and submit them to the Aquatics Supervisor within 24 hours.
- Never leave the pool area unattended when patrons are present or when doors are unlocked.
- Never leave the pool areas unlocked if there is no lifeguard on duty.
- Work a variety of hours between 5:30 am and 11:00 pm.
- Fulfill any other duties as directed by supervisors.
- Demonstrate genuine enthusiasm and care.
- Provide a variety of workouts for participants; introduce new exercises monthly.
- Compliment, encourage, and challenge participants.
- Watch for over‑exertion.
- Use only equipment provided by the Faribault Community Center.
- Do not give medical advice.
- Educate participants on the positive and negative impacts of each exercise and proper use of fitness equipment.
- Act and look professional; instructors must wear a one‑piece swimsuit.
- Include a warm‑up, stretching, aerobic set, toning, cool‑down, and stretch in each workout.
- Put all fitness equipment neatly away after class.
- Close and clean the pool area if your class is the last event in the pool for the day.
- Attend 2 hours of in‑service training each month (usually the last Sunday).
- Instruct either on deck or in the water close to the pool edge.
- Fulfill any other duties as assigned by supervisors.
- Perform miscellaneous duties such as running errands, picking up supplies for activities, helping set up for classes or events.
- Education: American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and first aid;
American Red Cross CPR for the professional rescuer; basic knowledge of water exercise fundamentals. - Experience: Thorough knowledge and application of swimming and water safety skills; understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures; leadership, public relations and communication skills.

Certifications:
American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid;
American Red Cross CPR for the professional rescuer.
- Works under the general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor.
- Uses emergency pool equipment.
- Physical Demands: Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, or hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects; reach with hands and arms; occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; requires close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor weather conditions; frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; noise level usually quiet in office and moderately loud in program settings.
