Estimator – Michigan Paving & Materials

Position Overview:
The Estimator is responsible for accurately determining material, equipment, and labor requirements for construction projects using project specifications and historical data. This role develops detailed budgets and proposals that comply with legal standards and company policies.
- Conduct pre‑bid site visits to evaluate conditions, gather measurements, understand traffic and haul routes, and identify factors impacting costs and schedule.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for asphalt paving, milling, and related construction projects, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
- Review plans, specifications, and bid documents to identify scope, requirements, and potential risks.
- Prepare and submit competitive bids and proposals in compliance with local regulations and company standards.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, contractors, and engineers.
- Solicit and evaluate quotes from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing and quality.
- Work closely with the construction team to align estimates with execution plans.
- Utilize estimating software and digital tools to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Ensure all estimates adhere to safety standards, environmental regulations, and Michigan DOT requirements.
- Monitor projects through all phases and update estimates based on constructability and quantities.
- Generate various reports required by the immediate supervisor.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field, or equivalent training and experience.
- Valid state driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
- Five or more years of experience in construction management and/or construction estimating (preferred).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Minimum age 18 years.
- Pass pre‑employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures per company policy.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors.
- Willingness to maintain a current driver’s license.
- Willingness to travel and work away from home when required.
- Availability for nights and weekends as necessary.
- Compliance with OSHA and MSHA regulations; must wear required PPE.
- Commitment to achieving organizational goals.

- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently and under pressure.
- Effective internet research and evaluation skills.
- Capable of driving change and promoting new concepts.
- Understanding procurement’s impact on financial results.
- Frequently stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects, talk and hear.
- Vision with correction for close, distance, peripheral, depth.
- Occasional standing, walking, bending, reaching with arms above shoulders.
- Occasional lift up to 10 lbs. and exert forces of pushing/pulling 10 lbs.
- Standard office environment; moderate noise levels.
